"Have a plan!"

Output

A study in controlled unpredictability—using material limitations to generate motion and depth.

Process

I started by creating a short base animation. I printed each frame on vellum, keeping every sheet aligned in the tray as the next one printed. This caused the ink to bleed and drag across the surface—something I had encountered before, but this time chose to use intentionally. I then stacked the frames and scanned them together. The layering created a “ghosting” effect, where each frame subtly revealed the next, enhancing the sense of motion. From there, I brought the scans into After Effects to reconstruct the animation, then moved into Photoshop to further manipulate the frames. After refining them, I returned to After Effects to build out the final animation. Finally, I created an image by blending all the frames into a single static composition, compressing the motion into one moment.
